GN Solids Control recently completed the manufacture of four drilling mud tank cleaning wastewater treatment systems for an African customer. The systems are designed to provide an integrated solution for handling contaminated wastewater generated during the cleaning of drilling mud tanks and related equipment.
During drilling operations, mud tanks periodically require cleaning as drilling fluids are changed, tanks are taken out of service, or accumulated solids are removed. This process can generate wastewater containing residual drilling fluid, suspended solids, fine particles, oil, and other contaminants. Direct disposal of this wastewater can be costly and inefficient, particularly when significant volumes of liquid are involved.
The GN treatment systems are designed to improve the management of this waste stream through solids separation, fluid transfer, chemical treatment, and clarification. As shown in the completed units, the major process equipment is integrated with storage and treatment tanks, transfer pumps, piping, valves, and associated controls on heavy-duty skid structures.
Chemical conditioning can be used to improve the separation of fine suspended particles that may not settle effectively on their own. By promoting flocculation before subsequent separation or clarification, the system can reduce the suspended-solids loading in the treated liquid and improve overall treatment efficiency. Pumping equipment provides controlled movement of the wastewater between the different stages of the process.
A skid-mounted design also simplifies transportation and field installation. Instead of assembling an entire treatment system from individual components at the operating site, the primary equipment can be manufactured, integrated, and prepared as a packaged system before shipment. This reduces field assembly requirements while providing a more compact and organized treatment footprint.
For drilling contractors and waste-management companies, treating tank-cleaning wastewater can provide several operational advantages. Removing solids from the liquid phase reduces the volume of material requiring disposal, while the recovered water may be suitable for additional treatment or potential reuse depending on the application and required water quality.
The shipment of four complete systems to Africa demonstrates the increasing demand for integrated treatment equipment alongside conventional drilling solids-control systems. From the drilling fluid circulating system to the wastewater produced during tank cleaning and maintenance, effective solids-liquid separation remains an important part of managing drilling operations and their associated waste streams.
