Modern drilling contractors are under constant pressure to mobilize faster, reduce site preparation, and minimize the footprint of their equipment. While shale shakers, desanders, and desilters receive much of the attention in solids control discussions, the overall packaging of a mud recycling system can have just as much impact on project efficiency.
A self-contained mud recycling system combines the essential solids control equipment—including the shale shaker, hydrocyclones, mixing hopper, pumps, lighting, and electrical controls—onto a single engineered platform. The result is a compact package that can be transported, installed, and commissioned with significantly less field assembly than conventional tank farms.
One advantage of this approach is flexibility. Different drilling environments often require different methods of installation, and a single mounting style is rarely ideal for every application. GN's B-Series Self-Contained Mud Recycling Systems can therefore be configured in several ways depending on the project requirements.
Skid-Mounted Systems
Skid-mounted systems remain one of the most common configurations for permanent or semi-permanent drilling operations.
These units are typically positioned with cranes or heavy lifting equipment and placed directly onto prepared foundations or support structures. Once installed, the skid provides excellent rigidity while simplifying maintenance access through integrated walkways, guardrails, and service platforms.
For projects where relocation is infrequent, skid-mounted systems provide a straightforward and durable solution while minimizing unnecessary mechanical complexity.
Hydraulic Jack-Up Systems
For contractors operating in remote regions or locations where crane availability is limited, hydraulic jack-up systems offer significant logistical advantages.
Rather than relying on external lifting equipment, integrated hydraulic cylinders raise the system to its operating height after arrival on site. This design greatly reduces installation time while improving mobility between drilling locations.
GN was among the first manufacturers to develop fast hydraulic jack-up mud systems, helping operators reduce rig-up time without sacrificing structural integrity or equipment accessibility.
For multi-well drilling programs where equipment is relocated repeatedly, reducing mobilization time can have a measurable impact on overall operating costs.
Trailer-Mounted Systems
Trailer-mounted mud recycling systems provide the highest level of mobility.
Because the complete system remains mounted to a transport trailer, contractors can move directly between drilling locations with minimal disassembly. This configuration is particularly attractive for water well drilling, HDD projects, geotechnical work, and exploration programs where frequent relocation is expected.
The integrated design allows operators to arrive on location, level the trailer, connect utilities, and begin commissioning much more quickly than with conventional modular tank systems.
Engineered Around the Application
While all three configurations perform the same primary function—recycling drilling fluids and removing unwanted solids—the optimal design depends largely on project logistics.
Factors such as transportation restrictions, crane availability, anticipated relocation frequency, available site space, and drilling program duration all influence the most appropriate system configuration.
